A Dive Watch for a Cause: The Nivada Grenchen Depthmaster Caribbean Blue, Protecting Sharks

Some evenings are about a product. This one was about a belief: that a watch built for the sea should also give something back to it.

On the evening of June 17, Little Europe Jewellers and Swiss watch brand Nivada Grenchen welcomed guests to Calmos Café in Grand Case for An Evening for a Cause: the launch of a 25-piece Nivada Grenchen Depthmaster limited edition, created in honor of Sint Maarten and the Caribbean, with a percentage of proceeds benefitting the Caribbean Shark Coalition.

It was, as we'd hoped, not a store event, but a Little Europe experience by the sea.

A watch born for the deep

To understand the evening, you have to understand the watch. First introduced in 1965, the Nivada Grenchen Depthmaster is a genuine icon of dive-watch history, built in an era when a timepiece was a tool, and a tool had to survive where its wearer could not. Its cushion-shaped case, substantial crown and thick knurled bezel were engineered for the water, and its distinctive markers earned it a nickname collectors still use with affection today.

Nivada Grenchen has been making watches like this since 1926, when the brand was founded in Grenchen, Switzerland, a century ago. Across the 1950s and 1960s it built a reputation on instruments for exploration, from the polar cold of the Antarctic to the pressure of the deep. The Depthmaster belongs to that lineage: a watch that was never about decoration, and always about endurance.

For a Caribbean edition, then, the ocean wasn't a theme to be added. It was already the whole story.

Why the cause came first

"This began as a watch idea, but we knew it needed to mean something more," said Sanjay Hiro of Little Europe. "Sint Maarten is home for us. So the question became this: how can this launch support the waters and the marine life that make our island so special?"

That question led to the Caribbean Shark Coalition. Founded in 2020, the Coalition brings together scientists, conservation organizations, governments and local communities to protect sharks and rays across the Greater Caribbean. These are animals that, as the Coalition is quick to remind us, don't recognize island borders.

Sharks are often misunderstood, but they are essential to healthy oceans. A living shark is worth far more to the Caribbean than a dead one.

It became the anchor of the evening, and the line we kept returning to: protect the sharks, protect the whole sea.

The evening itself

A cocktail and mocktail menu created for the evening; the signature pour echoed the dial's turquoise.

Guests arrived at golden hour to cocktails and lite bites at the water's edge. The signature pour of the night carried the same turquoise as the limited edition's dial, a small, deliberate echo of the watch in the glass.

Inside, the full Nivada Grenchen collection was laid out for guests to discover, with our watch specialists on hand to talk through the pieces. There were conversations about heritage and movement and proportion, the kind of unhurried, one-to-one moments that a boutique like ours exists to create.

As the evening settled in, the conversations carried on over champagne, the sea darkening behind us.

As the sun went down over the water, everything felt exactly as it should: a Swiss icon of the deep, brought home to the Caribbean, in service of the ocean that gave it meaning in the first place.
